Moving Toward Accessibility: Acknowledging the Needs of People With Disabilities in Addiction and Treatment Services

Moving Toward Accessibility: Acknowledging the Needs of
People with Disabilities in Addiction Treatment and Prevention Services,
from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2008, at the New Jersey Hospital Association
Conference Center in Princeton. Directions
The conference will feature keynote speaker Dennis Moore, Ed.D, Director
of Substance Abuse and Disability Related Issues at Wright State University,
School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio.
Sign language interpreters and CART will be provided for the conference
and workshop sessions. Additional accommodations will be available upon request. Requests for accommodations must be made by Wednesday, October 15, 2008. The registration fee is $40 and includes lunch. Scholarships are available.

Examining national trends in substance abuse prevention and treatment for individuals with disabilities, this talk. looks at what has been available, what changes are underway and what needs to happen in the future.

AM Break-out Sessions
A) Substance Abuse and Developmental Disabilities: System and Individual Perspective
This workshop will explore the coinciding conditions of substance abuse and cognitive intellectual disabilities. It examines the current service delivery systems and the barriers/ enhancers for effective recovery and treatment of the dually diagnosed. It will discuss strategies for treatment advocacy, development of creative interventions and Individual Relapse Prevention Planning.

B) Accommodating for Individuals who are Blind or Visually Impaired
This program will cover what the common preconceived barriers to providing services to individuals with vision loss are and what kinds of accommondations are available for people with vision loss.

A) Vocational Rehabilitation, Disability and Substance Abuse
This workshop addresses employment issues faced by individuals with disabilities and addictions and explores the benefits of having a vocational rehabilitation component to a treatment program.

B) Accommodating Individuals with Hearing Loss
This workshop will cover the different types of accommodations available for people who are deaf, hard of hearing or late deafened, including sign language interpreters, assistive listening devices and CART. It will also cover programs and organizations in the state providing substance abuse treatment and prevention services for this population.
