Department of Senior Programs
The
Department of Senior Programs currently offers Senior Sense, a
series of trainings intended to increase awareness of the magnitude
and seriousness of alcohol, prescription, and over-the-counter
drug abuse among older adults. The educational strategy gives
older adults a clearer understanding of the aging process as it
relates to medications and alcohol; they learn the importance
of good communication with healthcare professionals; and learn
how healthy lifestyle choices including good nutrition, exercise
and community involvement improve quality of life. All participants,
older adults and staff, gain an understanding of how age-related
stressors and life changes put an older adult at risk for increased
alcohol consumption, and learn about resources and assessment
tools to aid in diagnosis.
