Professional Development Workshops

AAC and Autism

This workshop will provide attendees with theoretical bases for using augmentative alternative communication with individuals on the ASD spectrum. Research shows that those on the ASD spectrum are visually oriented. AAC is virtually a visual language which provides speech output. For years individuals have been using the PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) as a means of communicating wants and needs but only to those individuals who understand iconic symbols.

Providing speech output for visually-based symbol systems will enhance communicative competence and increase the variety of individuals students with ASD can communicate with. Additionally, the workshop will provide intervention strategies to help integrate AAC users into the activities of the classroom and community.

Full Day Session Cost: $125
